Gray Friar (Holy Church Mendicant)

Gray Friars seek to bring the holy wisdom of the Church everywhere they can. To the poor on the streets, to powerful wizards with whom they teach at the great universities, to distant pagan lands, to the wilds of the forests and mountain. The traditional work of the order is to live with the poor, as the poor. Because of this Gray Friars are often skilled beggars and willing to associate with those that most Holy Church priests would sooner avoid. Like their fellow friars, the Black Friars, they also seek to rout out evil, but the techniques they use may be quite different.
As practitioners of a human religion, Gray Friars must have human blood, but half elves and even dreadbloods have been allowed to join the order. Holy Church clerics normally have the easiest time becoming friars, but others with the right spirit and abilities are welcome. Gray Friars are masters of divine magic and are accomplished scholars, but it is their open and sincere nature that sets them apart.
As Holy Church mendicants, male Gray Friars are associated with a priory, a sort of monastery, but are encouraged to travel, spreading and enforcing the holy word. Women join a related order of nuns, and live in convents. The Gray Friars possessions belong to the order, but in practice the friar can keep them as long as they give at least 10% of their income to the poor. They can in turn expect a commensurate amount of support from their order. Gray Friars cannot marry, and in general must maintain a life that is plain and oriented to the spiritual, not the worldly. They are well known for the grey cassocks that they normally wear. While part of an order, most of the time the Gray Friar will be free to do as they will, as long as it is consistent with the spirit of the order and teachings of the Holy Church.

Weapons and Armor Proficiency: Gray Friars do not gain any additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Friars Demeanor: The Friar adds one point of their wisdom bonus per Friar level to Gather Information, Diplomacy, and Perform checks. They may also add it to Sense Motive checks, in addition to the normal Wisdom modifier. If they have the Knowledge domain they also add this bonus to all Knowledge checks. For example, a 2nd level Friar with a 16 wisdom would receive a +2 on these checks, at third level or higher the Friar would receive a +3.

Scholar: The friar adds one point of their wisdom bonus per friar level to Knowledge checks.

Cleric Spells per Day and Domain Abilities: At 2nd level and each level thereafter, if the friar can cast cleric spells their caster level and spells per day increase as if their cleric level increased by one. Their cleric level is also treated as one higher with respect to any level dependent domain abilities.

Turn Undead: A friar who can turn undead adds their class level - 1 to their cleric level when making a turning check.

Domain: At 2nd level the friar, if they can cast cleric spells, adds a third domain: Animal, Music or Travel. They gain the special ability from the domain, and can prepare their domain spells from it.

Domain Spells: Starting at 2nd level a friar that can cast cleric spells can prepare and cast a second 1st level and 2nd level domain spell each day. At 3rd level he can prepare an additional 3rd and 4th level domain spells. At each additional level can they prepare and cast a second domain spell of a higher level, as indicated on table 2-17. They only gain an additional domain spell if they can cast spells of that level.
